Overview

Alpaca Open Day allows the public the opportunity to get up close and personal with these cute and fluffy sheepy-horsey things, which is basically the best thing ever. Run by Hans Roecoert, Waitakere Alpacas is home to over 240 Alpacas which are sold locally and internationally. Waitakere Alpacas is opening their farm to the public to promote alpacas, alpaca fibre, and alpaca products.  Patrons can watch demonstrations of spinning, carding and felting of alpaca products, and fleece, yarn and other products will be for sale. The best part though, is the chance to get to know an alpaca, with opportunities to feed and pet the animals.

Originally Peruvian in origin, there are now over 700 owners and 14,000 registered alpaca in New Zealand. According to the Alpaca Association of New Zealand (yes, that exists), the alpaca industry is “enjoying healthy sustainable growth and delivering many different aspects to different people within the alpaca community; from lifestyle and investment options to alpaca related events, and fibre products”.

If you needed any more proof that Alpacas are awesome, there even exists a National Alpaca Day (May 3rd); a day dedicated to the celebration of these glorious creatures. I know. Amazing. The Alpaca Association of New Zealand says that the national day is “one day a year when we can all celebrate alpacas and share the joy of owning them with the public”.

This may literally be the best event in New Zealand. Not to be missed.
