Derek Henderson’s portfolio spans everything from fashion photography, expansive exteriors, artless portraits of people in their natural habitats, and compelling moments in time. The New Zealand photographer’s eye for turning ordinary scenes into mysterious beauty is second to none and has seen him spend the last twenty years divided between Auckland, New York, London, Los Angeles and Sydney.
Highlights of his work, which is regularly touted as being ‘anti-hero’ and ‘anti-iconic’, includes complex portraits of Maori teenagers, a series around those who spend their working week in an abattoir, and images inspired by Eleanor Catton’s book The Luminares set around the gold rush of the 1860s.
At the next Spark Lab, Henderson will take centre stage to show off some of his latest work, share insight into his techniques, and reveal what really inspires him.
The Spark Lab is a space dedicated as a launch pad for new things, ideas, products, experiences and art. Every month the space takes on a different theme; July in Design and Art month.
