Overview

The latest weird but bound to be wonderful film from the producers of dark comedies Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz is due to invade the Rialto Newmarket cinema this coming March.

Attack the Block follows a gang of South London teens / hardnuts who try to defend their turf against a bunch of bloodthirsty alien creatures intent on turning their council estate into a war zone.

Comic and debut film-maker Joe Cornish cleverly uses his medium-sized budget to suggest rather than show the aliens themselves, and succeeds in creating a genuine action picture from which comedy naturally arises, rather than a series of laboured gags we are expected to buy into as drama.

As fate would have it, at the start of the film the gang of petty thieves have just mugged a nurse and are about to move on to selling hard drugs for a gang leader. But when aliens threaten the natural order of their existence, this gang of bullies on BMXs must find redemption by teaming up with their victim and saving the world.

Sound ridiculous? Well of course it is -  it's sci-fi but that hasn't stopped it attracting rave reviews from critics and movie-goers alike. Attack the Block is destined to be one of the movie highlights of the summer.
