Overview

Auckland's international photography festival is back this June, bringing you a diverse collection of exhibitions, shows and interactive events throughout the city.

Established to celebrate all sides of photography in New Zealand and abroad, the Auckland Festival of Photography (AFP) 2019 welcomes both emerging and established artists to share their art. Photographers, curators, students, amateurs and professionals alike showcase what they do best.

Throughout the 17 days of the festival, Auckland will be home to more than 100 events and exhibitions across major galleries, project spaces, non-gallery venues and public sites.

Kicking off the whole festival is the ninth Annual Commission of AFP by Vyonne Shaw, an exhibition taking place at Silo Park in Wynard Quarter. With her work, Shaw uses portraiture to touch on topical themes of relationships, different roles, and attraction and rejection in social groups. This work is part of a larger collection curated by Jessica Lim, featuring work from artists and collectives from Asia.

Other events making up the festival include satellite shows, the Nikon Auckland Photo Day on June 8 and core exhibitions from leading Kiwi photographers such as Fiona Pardington and Vincent Ward. The festival is also a chance for New Zealand photographers to win, with local artists eligible to enter the 2019 Mazda Award, with this year's theme of 'Beauty by Subtraction'.
