Overview

Global art project Before I Die invites people to share their hopes and dreams in a public space. It’s about remembering and letting others know what is most important to you as well as giving people the opportunity to understand the community in new ways.

The St Patricks Square installation was instigated by Juan Molina and Sophie Isler, who both work across from the square. But the idea first came from New Orleans artist and urban planner Candy Chang. When she lost someone she loved, she painted the wall of an abandoned house in her neighbourhood with chalkboard paint and stencilled it with a grid of the sentence: “Before I die I want to ________________.” Passersbys could use chalk to write directly on the wall. The same applies here so go along and read what other Aucklanders aspire to achieve in their lifetime.
