Overview
According to the gift registry at Briscoes, a 20-year anniversary obliges china as the gift of choice. However, New Zealand contemporary dance company Black Grace are celebrating their 20th anniversary not with extravagant blue and white crockery but with twenty shows in twenty different locations throughout Aotearoa. Also to mark the milestone Black Grace are presenting their large-scale performance Siva in Auckland for two days only.
Black Grace is New Zealand’s leading contemporary dance group, which celebrates origins in Pacific contemporary dance, innovative choreography and cultural exploration. Black Grace focuses on being unique, and finding power through rich story telling and through the sheer strength of the human body.
20 for 20 offers audiences a showcase of energetic and dynamic short works, and don’t worry, the show lasts longer than twenty minutes. Choreographers Neil Ieremia, Sean MacDonald and Siaosi Mulipola present a mixture of iconic and brand new performances. A casual setting allows you to embrace the full experience with little to distract you from the finely sculpted bodies of Black Grace dancers. With a fast pace and invigorating energy, 20 for 20 is likely to tempt you to quit your day job and become an enthusiastic and dedicated follower, a Black Grace groupie, in the best sense of the word that is.
Siva is named after the Samoan word for traditional dance, a culture that is said to have been a prominent inspiration behind the outstanding performance. Siva embraces the ever-changing world with a desperate and strong longing to cling on to tradition. This pioneering performance has been praised as ‘strikingly beautiful’ with an energy of no rival, which has come to be known as a Black Grace trademark.
