Overview

Seeming to be an inescapable topic in Auckland at the moment, we have yet another event running with the theme of all black everything. It's one of those things that just stands to be because it always has been, the inextricable connection with kiwi culture and the colour black. On show in the brand new New Zealand fashion Museum at Britomart is the Black in Fashion exhibition, which explores the subject of how and why this tradition came to be.

Black in Fashion showcases a range of New Zealand fashion objects and garments as well as narrative, photographic and film displays. There is also a series of evening and weekend events during the exhibition where guest speakers will explore, debate and entertain on the theme of black as part of the New Zealand identity.

A definite black affair, the show still remains engaging and stimulating, provoking thought and invoking ideas. Before we pigeon hole this as a Fashion Event and scare off too many of the blokes, it's worth a mention that the exhibition covers everything from culture, sports, film, street wear and the arts. A true exploration that gets to the roots of the connection between our heritage and the spreading of this black identity. Curated by Doris de Pont, this is a real stand out exhibition, adding another dimension into the understanding our young New Zealand history.
