Overview

Experience the best of California Design 1930-1965 before the exhibition closes at the end of this weekend. Closing day (Sunday 29 September) features a Design Encounter with one of the world's biggest Barbie fans followed by a screening of Visual Acoustics.

Meet and talk with avid Barbie Doll collector Patsy Carlyle who owns the largest collection of boxed Barbies in New Zealand. Patsy will be bringing a range of pre 1965 Barbies to show alongside the world's first from 1959 and her first beau, Ken which feature in the California Design: Living in a Modern Way exhibition.

To celebrate Mattel and Auckland Art Gallery will be giving away one collector’s edition Audrey Hepburn Barbie inspired by the iconic 1953 Hollywood film Roman Holiday. The giveaway takes place at Patsy Carlyle’s Design Encounter at the Auckland Art Gallery atrium between 12 and 2pm.

Also screening at 3pm in the auditorium is the film Visual Acoustics, which celebrates the life and career of Julius Shulman, the world's greatest architectural photographer.
