Overview

Swimming with sharks: a life long dream? Or something that makes you shudder with fear at the very thought of it? Well, if you're of the former, and happen to be a photographer, this event is sure to reel you in.

Hook, Line and Sinking is the title of Justin Gilligan's highly commended image from the Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition competition in the ‘World in Our Hands’ category. Auckland Museum's Expert Sessions, which run alongside the exhibition, gives curious punters, amateurs and professionals alike the chance to meet some of the world's best wildlife photographers and hear the amazing back stories to their work.

At Expert Sessions: Hook, Line and Sinking, you'll hear about Justin’s experience combining marine science and photojournalism and how he captured his award-winning shot. Justin is an Australian freelance photojournalist with an Honours degree in marine science and a passion for all things natural. His images and feature articles have been published around the world, gracing the pages of magazines such as Australian Geographic, Ocean Geographic, BBC Wildlife, Asian Geographic, and New Scientist.

Of his work Justin says, "Although it is cliché, nature photography provides a voice for our natural world. I am pleased that my image is included in this year’s Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition. The exhibition is a celebration of nature, and pays testament to all the hard-working nature photographers out there that provide a voice for a seldom seen and often forgotten world."
