Overview

They may be the nation's favourite musical accompaniment when grilling up a barbecue storm, but Fat Freddy’s Drop will move beyond the greasy backyard speakers into a setting full of reptiles, amphibians and exotic mammals this Valentine's Day.

The romantic show at the Auckland Zoo will be the band's only New Zealand headline show this summer before they head back into the studio to continue recording their new album.

The Wellington roots band rose to prominence with their debut studio album, Based on a True Story in 2005. The album was the first independently distributed album to reach first place in New Zealand charts, and is the second highest-selling album by a national artist. Originally forming as a jam band in Wellington in the '90s, the seven-piece are still known for their drawn-out and improvised live performances.

Despite a relatively quiet summer season for the group, they've spent the majority of the past year playing to sold-out crowds across the world.
