Freedom Farmers: Urban Walking Tour with Matthew Bradbury

Exploring the half-baked urban utopias of Auckland.

December 09, 2013

Overview

The average city walking tour is about seeing beautiful or amazing sights, but this is not your average urban meander. As part of the Auckland Art Gallery's summer exhibition Freedom Farmers: New Zealand Artists Growing Ideas, take this rare opportunity to discover Auckland's array of abandoned architectural dreams with senior lecturer in the Department of Landscape Architecture at UNITEC, Matthew Bradbury.

The tour of Auckland's failed urban utopias includes Felton Mathews' vision of Regency Crescents in the 1840s, Gummer and Ford's 1925 transposition of the Roman Piazza del Popola and the 1980s attempt to build a Tokyo mega-structure for the Chase Corporation.

Tours will happen on Sunday December 8, 2013 and Sunday February 2, 2014. Both will depart from the entrance of Auckland Art Gallery at 1pm.
