Fringe Festival 2022
An extravagant and outrageous array of arts offerings are taking over the capital.
Overview
After a slew of cancelled events and festivals already this year, Wellington's beloved Fringe Festival is going ahead at red level and organisers are hoping it may just be the best yet.The festival is taking over Pōneke for three weeks, featuring more than 200 events across 37 different venues, including theatre, circus, comedy, cabaret, dance, visual arts, sonic arts, and film.
Some festival highlights to check out over the next few weeks include contemporary dance pair Björn Åslund and Tabitha Dombroski with their show exploring phobias Sublime Interludes, or Loops, a circus-theatre piece creating a powerful and horrifying story.
If you're looking for a "silly, yet sexy olympic adventure" (who isn't?) comedian Sarah Harpur (Kāi Tahu) is partnering up with director and Fringe award winner Carrie Green (Ngāti Porou with their new show The Shit Kid. For fans of ASMR, check out Amy Atkins' satirical show aurally tingling us with fruit and veg, or if you want something a little sexy, Red Light Revue combines musical theatre singers, naughty drag artists and burlesque performers.
The festival runs from February 18 – March 12, so check out the full program and pop at least one of the performances on your list. It's been a tough couple of years for the arts community so this is a great chance to get out and show your support.
