Overview

There's no need to make the two-hour trip to Waitomo to catch a glimpse of glowworms in their natural habitat — though a boat ride through the twinkling grotto should definitely be on your list of things to do. Manurewa's Totara Park is one of the few places to see the luminescent creatures in Auckland.

This January, Auckland Council's outdoor recreation initiative Out and About is hosting a series of free glowworm tours though the gardens. Each guided tour on January 14, 15, 16 and 21 will run for one hour. Keen animal spotters may also see eels, rabbits and birds on the tour.
