Overview

Wellington-based Groeni (Albert Green) is the New Zealand love child of Lo Fang and James Blake.

Much like Mount Kimbie, Groeni builds his lush soundscapes entirely on intuition. In an interview with The Audience, Groeni said "[As a musician] I kind of trust my instincts, take my time and experiment a lot," he says. "I test out what I will and won't respond to. When I find something and my gut says yes, I won't question that. It's kind of about that 'click' moment a lot of the time. At least I usually know the barriers surrounding a sound… but often lack the knowledge to have it at hand. I'll go searching for those barriers until something clicks. In other situations it's more natural, though limited to what I am comfortable with."

His recent sophomore EP Hewn was created at the base of Mount Taranaki, and musically explores the idea of rediscovery and understanding between people; the parallels and contrasts between two humans. “There are links between the songs, things tie together and reappear at various points. Certain words, subjects and sounds are cut up and redistributed between the five songs”, he said. What all that fanciful talk and eloquent descriptions translate into is an album which is addictive to listen to; enough so that you may find yourself pressing that repeat button quite a few times.
