The personification of winter.

Overview

Having exhibited both nationally and internationally for the past 20 years, Natasha Keating brings to you the pop-up exhibition Hine Takurua.

According to some Māori mythology, Hine Takurua is the winter maiden and one of the two wives of Te Manu-i-te-Ra (the bird in the sun). She is the personification of winter.

Keating says Hine Takurua is a pou to stand, a marker of time and place, to align with ancestral stories and to reflect on their teachings as a guide for our lives today.

She says "I create contemporary 'Pou', totemic portraits that reflect the lives, loves and heartache of Maori women, today. 'Pou' are the figurative carvings of our ancestors, which line the walls of our wharenui (meeting houses) our whare tipuna."
