Overview
Nature and culture are at the heart of the Depot Artspace's current and upcoming exhibitions. Currently in the Vernacular Lounge is Gond Artists: Beasts and Birds, a selection of works by tribal artists from India. Kate Potter, who spent time with the Gond tribe while in central India, has curated the exhibition of works she garnered on her travels.
Gond art typically shows mother nature and her bounties. One of its most intriguing features is that each Gond artist has developed their own signature style - a characteristic pattern composed of dots and dashes. Gond artists can be identified by their unique 'code', which is used to fill motifs drawn from nature and societal customs, or to depict folk stories and legends.
In the Outerspace Gallery, Jacob Milne presents a suite of prints exploring the idea of utopia. Utopia born is a series of lithographs which are illustrative imaginings of a unique utopian society. The work points to a duality of existence; two worlds that exist together, but in isolation from each other.
