Overview

In celebration of Māori New Year, Matariki, a pop-up cinema will be erected along Viaduct Harbour. For three nights the free Matariki Secret Cinema will screen a series of 50-minute documentary films by renowned storyteller Pita Turei. The films were selected for their nautical and Auckland waterfront references.

Screening every night at 6, 7 and 8pm will be Hotu Painu (1988), a documentary anchored by the sinking of the Rainbow Warrior; Waka — The Awakening Dream (1990), a chronicle of the largest gathering of Maori tribal war canoes to commemorate 150 years since the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi; and Kupe — Voyaging by the Stars (1993), the story of the construction and maiden voyage of Te Aurere to Rarotonga undertaken by Northland building contractor Hekenukumai 'Hector' Busby.

Lalele Organic Gelato will be serving specially crafted ice cream for each screening. Find the Matariki Secret Cinema at 95 Customs Street West, CBD.
