Overview
Wooden Shjips guitarists, Ripley Johnson and Sanae Yamada visit New Zealand for their first show as Moon Duo this March.
Recorded in isolation in the American Rocky Mountains, Circles, their second full-length album, was in production for a period of over six months, with the pair taking inspiration for it from Ralph Waldo Emerson’s 1841 essay of the same name on the symbol and nature of the flying perfect.
The album’s sound is an unusual one. Fusing tightly the “futuristic pylon hum and transistor reverb of Suicide or Silver Apples with the heat-haze fuzz of American rock’n’roll to create tracks of blistering, 12-cylinder space rock.” All in all the record has a somewhat light-headed feel to it, one that’s as far out and rhythmically indulgent as it’s possible to get.
