Overview

Nestled into grassy undulations, peeping out from between the trees or standing proud on the cliff top of Fort Takapuna you'll find them. What? Sculptures, of course. It's time again for NZ Sculpture onShore and this year there are over 120 outdoor works from both established and emerging contemporary artists.

Since it's inception in 1995, NZ Sculpture onShore has exhibited work from New Zealand's leading sculptors. The 2012 collection features artists such as Paul Hartigan, Bing Daw, Scott Eady, Christian Nicholson and Lucy Bucknall, to name but a few. The exhibition is curated by Rob Garrett who has played numerous roles in the New Zealand Art industry in his 35 years of experience, including government advisor. He also just happens to be a specialist in public art.

The exterior exhibition is complemented by the indoor Sculpture Gallery, displaying smaller pieces for the home or garden. More suitably sized for the average buyer and not so hard on the wallet.

After exploring, grab a tasty bite or a chilled beverage at The Officers Mess Café, hosted by Jeremy Schmid of TwoFifteen Restaurant in Dominion Road. There's a great summer menu with treats for the kids as well as a license to serve beer and wine, which will keep everyone happy.

Guided tours take place everyday at 11am and 2pm and there is also a Kidzone on weekend days to keep young visitors entertained, though they are likely to enjoy the art work just as much as you.

A diverse and engaging exhibition of local talent, NZ Sculpture onShore is surprising and delightful, and a fun day out for the whole family. If you still need more convincing, know that your money is going to good use. By attending you'll also be doing your good deed for the year, as NZ Sculpture onShore proudly supports Women's Refuge.
