Oscar Dowling

We guarantee it won't be the last time you hear about this low-key songwriter.

Overview

Oscar Dowling's debut album, Fresh and Easy, is aptly named. The one time guitarist of Auckland band New Gum Sarn has written a collection of songs that combine classic pop sensibilities with brooding guitar riffs. It's no wonder he has recently signed to Spunk Records, home to such judicious songsmiths as Bill Calahan, Deerhoof and Steven Malkmus (Fresh and Easy is also available on cassette tape from Prison Tapes). If he changed his last name to 'Darling,' I doubt anyone would bat an eye.

Dowling's star is rising fast. He recently supported folk singer Aldous Harding on her New Zealand tour and his singles 'East My Passing' and album opening 'The Life' were reviewed on Pitchfork late last year to critical acclaim. He may have shaved off his luscious locks but his musicianship is stronger than ever. You may be hearing his name for the first time but I can guarantee it won't be the last.

Support from The Pleasure Majenta, The Naenae Express and ECHO OHs.
