Overview

Local folk/pop band Paper Cranes have made an album, and they’re about to launch it into the world with all the sort of fanfare that a collection of great new music deserves.

Paper Cranes comprises of Fraser Browne, who sings and plays piano, harmonica and guitar and Naomi Browne, who sings and plays piano, shakuhachi, flute, ukelele, harmonica. Together with their band, and inspired by Fraser’s love of lyrical poetry and Naomi’s Japanese heritage, Paper Cranes are renowned for shaping stories into enchanting and enthralling music.

The band saw its first success in 2012 with the release of their debut EP Oh Love. Their catching single 'Little Darling', from the EP, won The Audience Wildcard NZ on Air grant. This inspired the musicians to take a year off and write an album in the tranquil natural environment of Huia in the Waitakeres. Not surprisingly, in that serene environment, 60 songs were created. These were then pared back to 15 songs, from which producer Nic Manders (Lydia Cole, Ezra Vine) chose the final 11 which now make up their first album, The Road Home.

Largely recorded at Roundhead Studios, the album was produced and mixed by Nic Mandersand mastered at Masterdisk New York by Andy VanDette. In the words of the artists themselves, “The Road Home is about travelling and everything that adventure brings: excitement and alienation, homesickness and new friendships, getting lost and re-finding yourself. And how you feel when you make your way home.”
