Overview
We promise you don't have to be a boat fan to be wowed by the Ports of Auckland Anniversary Regatta, which in great news, will be going ahead regardless of the country's current red status in the COVID-19 traffic light framework.
One of the world's largest single day regattas, this annal event first took place in Auckland's Harbour back in 1840 — and yes, things have levelled up a bit since then.
Still, the history of the day will be honoured with many restored tall ships and vintage boats on show, as well as sleek, high-tech vessels you might otherwise see in a James Bond movie.
Sadly the crowd-pleasing spectacle of the Dragon Boats won't be going ahead at red, but there are still plenty of reasons to mosey down to the waterfront, including races between tugboats and classic launches, centreboard and foiling classes, and even radio-controlled yachts.
If you don't understand any of those words, can we suggest just holing up at one of these waterfront bars instead, and just clapping when everyone else does.
Taking place across the day on Monday, January 31 from 9am - 5pm, you can find some of the best viewing locations here.
