Overview
To paraphrase the Nick Hornby classic High Fidelity: "music, films....these things matter." They matter because they play a role in how we perceive the world around us. They can shape the lens through which we view others. Through how we view ourselves. Which is why genuine diversity in both representation and story-telling is so imperative. Like other marginalised groups, the LGBTQI+ community has historically been reduced to steerotypes or sidelined throughout much of pop culture. However, the tides are shifting and there is currently a glut of LGBTQI+ films that depict and celebrate a variety of experiences within the Rainbow community.
Auckland celebrates Pride throughout the month of February. Queer Scenes is a monthly free screening of LGBTQI+ films at Basement Theatre. However they are taking the ethos across Auckland throughout February. Audiences can enjoy a myriad of queer identities on the silver screen. From glittering classics to quirky cult cinema, it's an opportunity to explore the past, present and future of LGBTQI+ representation on film.
