Overview

Free lunch may be on the cards this weekend as South African-born chicken joint Nando's sets up on Queens Wharf for a pop-up with a cause.

Appearing this Friday and Saturday (14-15 September), the Roaming Roost initiative will be serving peri-peri chicken in return for a gold coin donation or a can of non-perishable food. All proceeds and cans collected will be donated to the Auckland City Mission.

Between 12pm and 3pm, lunch-goers will be able to snag three chicken tenders in bastings of lemon and herb or hot. There will be a maximum of two servings per person (so essentially six tenders per person), and the full spread of Nando's condiment range will be available for those who want some extra heat on their chook.

The eatery has a long-standing relationship with the Mission; every day the company distributes left-over chicken to the charity's community drop-in centre. The pop-up also celebrates Nando's move to free-range chicken.
