Overview

New Zealand has a lot of exciting film fests in the works — the Cinema Italiano Festival and the freshly announced NZIFF lineup are, of course, two of the main contenders.

But a small film fest coming to Ponsonby on Friday evening is set to show flicks with a difference — they're all stories told using the unusual medium of folding screens. Yes, that sounds a little confusing, but it makes more sense when you learn that it's all to promote the foldable screens on a new Samsung phone.

On Friday, July 8 at Flying Fish in Ponsonby, short films from New Zealand directors Petra Cibilich, Fraser Chatham, Ian Sweeney, Mardo El Noor, Dean Hewison and Jase Hancox will be shown at the Samsung Foldable Films Festival. Ranging from hilarious perspectives on online dating to emotional stories of connection and journeys home, this mini film fest is a must-see for movie aficionados.

Six sessions will run between 5.30pm and 8.30pm and entry is free — just make sure you register for your spot online as spaces are limited. You'll also snag a drink and popcorn with your spot — essential movie viewing snackery.

If you miss out on a spot, don't worry — you'll be able to view the short films online from July 8 until July 29.
