Having just overcome a bout of pancreatic cancer earlier this year, US soul singer Sharon Jones will take the stage alongside her band the Dap-Kings for one show in Auckland this September.
The group formed out of the ashes of Desco Records - an independent label that developed an international underground following for releasing hard funk vinyl in the nineties. After the label’s demise, the roster of musicians regrouped to form an all-star band that would become the core of the Daptone Records stable.
For over a decade Sharon Jones and The Dap-Kings have performed their explosive live show across the globe, including two stopovers in NZ – at WOMAD in 2008 and Auckland’s Powerstation in 2010.
Earlier this year they released Give the People What They Want which has been called "an up-tempo stomper with ominous, thundering arrangements.”
