Overview

Those with a limited attention span and an insatiable craving for the performing arts are in luck, because the Short + Sweet Festival is returning to Auckland for its seventh season. The festival provides a platform for emerging and established talent to showcase original theatre and dance in a professional environment. Encouraging creative freedom, there is only one hard and fast rule - the works can be no more than ten minutes long.

The festival's all-inclusive ethos promotes experimentation, creating space for some of the performing arts' most daring works. While performances may be short, there is no scarcity of entertainment on offer. This year's theatre component (Short + Sweet has separate theatre and dance bills) has invited submissions from the musical theatre and cabaret genres, broadening performers' creative boundaries and giving audiences even more to sing and dance about. The lineup is set in advance but programmes for the final Gala nights are determined by audience vote.

A celebration of snappy storytelling, the festival will leave your creative-sweet-tooth satisfied. It's on for three weeks at The Auckland Performing Arts Centre (TAPAC) from Tuesday, August 30.
