Overview

After sold out seasons in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne, Single Asian Female is finally making its New Zealand premiere as part of Auckland Theatre Company's 2021 season.

Written by Michelle Law, Single Asian Female steps into the world of three women from one Chinese family living on the Sunshine Coast. Pearl runs a restaurant, eldest daughter Zoe is forced to think about the battle between her personal and professional desires, and her younger sister Mei is navigating school. Each contemplates the intersection between their heritage and their western lives, as well as its impact on their identity.

Indeed, their troubles and journey are made all the more powerful due to their status as Chinese women in Australia, and the struggles that it brings — as brought to life with humour and insight by Law, director Claire Christian and the talented cast. The play debuted in Brisbane in 2017, and is the first play from Law, who co-wrote Sh*t Asian Mothers Say with her brother Benjamin, and is proving one of Australia's rising stars.
