Overview

Daylight saving, warmer weather and the sun sneaking through the clouds all means one thing: summer is just around the corner, and Bar Beluga, nestled at the back of Rose Alley, is celebrating.

From Friday, September 29–Sunday, October 1, the bar will be home to Someplace Somewhere, a pop-up restaurant hosted by Kane Wilson, Sous Chef at Westmere restaurant Ragtag. The pop-up is not a ticketed event, which means first in, best dressed.

Wilson first launched Someplace Somewhere in Melbourne, where he worked in the shipping industry while attending culinary school at night. He also worked in Melbourne eateries such as Northern Light Yakitori Bar, where he fell in love with Japanese cuisine.

This passion for Japanese food and the way it is prepared has heavily influenced Someplace Somewhere's offering. Every version of the event is unique, with Wilson priding himself on the fact that he has never repeated a dish ever since his first pop-up restaurant across the ditch.

Although Wilson doesn't share what is on the menu until it's served, you can expect a few of his signature touches. Think: pickled and fermented ingredients with a touch of smoky flavour (thanks to his blowtorch), as well as his own handmade miso. Each of these dishes will be served alongside Bar Beluga cocktails — which wax and wane in accordance with the season — as well as its small wine and beer list, which have been carefully picked by Bar Beluga's owner Patrick Dillon.

On Saturday, after the kitchen has closed for the night, Bar Beluga will transform into a club, with events company Crayon taking over the space and throwing an epic party to celebrate Someplace Somewhere. There will be DJs, drink specials and dancing, of which you'll be able to do plenty of after filling up on Wilson's dishes.

The final day of the pop-up on Sunday, October 1 will mark the beginning of Bar Beluga's summer hours. The boutique cocktail bar will welcome punters into its covered courtyard for a Sunday session from noon each Sunday until the end of summer.
