Overview

Local synth dream-pop band Yumi Zouma will assemble for a free performance at Summer in the Square this January.

Although Yumi Zouma's band members pretty much grew up together in Christchurch, the band only formed in recent years after its members took off for different cities — Auckland, New York and Paris. From there, they wrote their debut album, Yoncalla, through a long-distance collaboration vis-a-vis Facebook messenger and emails.

Somehow the album's lyrics, which flowed from each band member's personal and made-up experiences, averted sounding Frankenstein-ish and instead a surprisingly smooth album was forged. Soon after that the band began to see a bit more of each other in person, opening for both Nick Murphy (nee Chet Faker) and Lorde in New Zealand as well as doing some international gigs. Their latest album Cascine was released in October.

Support will come from K2K, an Auckland-based electronica artist and DJ known for her track 'Malibu' from her recent EP Sugar.
