Overview
Tāmaki Makaurau is set to celebrate its Māori heritage with the fifth annual Tāmaki Herenga Waka Festival on Saturday, 23 January. The festival showcases the rich Māori history and culture of Auckland through food, arts and crafts, games, storytelling and live entertainment.
Waka sailings are happening throughout the day, and this year, for the first time, festival goers will have the chance to enjoy lunch or dinner on a waka. Other highlights include the Māori marketplace with a selection of delicious kai, a 50-metre live art installation, kapa haka performances and a laser and fireworks display to wrap up the festival.
Live performances and entertainment will take place throughout the day, including Trinity Roots, Seth Haapu and Maisey Rika. The free Tāmaki Herenga Waka Festival runs from 10am–10pm on Captain Cook Wharf.
