Overview
Fire-focused food will be on full display at Māngere East's Papatūānuku Kōkiri Marae in this new festival. The free entry Te Ahi Kōmau - Food, Fire, Festival celebrates South Auckland's fiery volcanic past and its legacy of rich soils and amazing produce.
The festival kicks off on Friday, 30 October with delicious hāngi and a light show. The following day visitors can choose from a variety of authentic fire-cooked food, including hāngi, umu, mataahi (spit), auahi (smoked) and flame-grilled delicacies.
The marae market will be running across both days showcasing the work of Māori entrepreneurs, and fire dancing, waiata and kapa haka will complete the experience.
Te Ahi Kōmau - Food, Fire, Festival is part of month-long festival of arts, eats and beats, Elemental AKL. Now in its second year, the festival is run by Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development (ATEED) in an effort to showcase the region's diverse food and culture and encourage visitation outside of peak months.
