Overview

UPDATED 10 JUNE, 2020: By popular demand the organisers of The Drive In are bringing the experience back for two nights. Four films will hit the big screen across Friday, 12 and Saturday, 13 June, including Dirty Dancing, Ford vs Ferrari, The Gentlemen and Pulp Fiction. Food trucks will be parking up to provide some eats to complement your movie.

Drive-in cinemas are seeing a resurgence because of the gathering and distancing measures in place to prevent the spread of COVID-19. In the past few weeks, the concept of movie watching from the car has popped up everywhere from vacant airport runways to empty carparks and yacht clubs.

AA Smartfuel and the organisers of the world's poshest picnic, Le Diner en Blanc, are getting in on the lights, camera and action this month, with ten nights dedicated to the classic cinematic experience at ASB Showgrounds. The Drive In event has been designed to align with the Government's current Alert Level 2 restrictions and will arrive at the venue from 27 May to 6 June.

A number of recent flicks are scheduled to hit the big screen at the Showgrounds, including Elton John biopic Rocketman, Taika Waititi's Academy Award-winner Jojo Rabbit, and unnerving clown horror IT. Topping off the lineup are all-time classics like Dirty Dancing, Pulp Fiction and The Notebook.

To create the classic drive-in experience, an FM radio station will be created so that film-goers can tune in on their car radios. Tickets cost $40 for one vehicle and one person — additional passengers are $7.50 each.

Hot and cold food will be available via pre-order from Burger Burger and Ben & Jerry, and there'll be snacks on offer for vehicle delivery.
