Overview

The People Who Play With Theatre, present another fascinating piece of visual theatre with The Last Man On Earth (Is Trapped In a Supermarket). What may be the ideal scenario for anti-social dieters fantasising about their next cheat day, is a harsh discovery for Tom, who shows up to work at his supermarket job one morning only discover he is the only person there. When he attempts to leave, the doors have locked behind him and he is trapped. As with many occasions in Tom’s life, it appears he has somehow been left out of the apocalypse.

Starring Ryan Dulieu, who took the Basement Theatre stage earlier in the year with This Is Our Youth and featuring the talents of puppeteer Chye-Ling Huang to enact the more surreal moments, The Last Man On Earth (Is Trapped In a Supermarket) supposes what happens when one person is caught on Earth at the end of the world, left alone under flickering fluorescent bulbs.

Directed by Ben Anderson, Auckland-based playwright, maker of things and leader of The People Who Play With Theatre whose company mantra is to make existence more enjoyable through theatre. The aesthetic leans towards a visual and handmade approach – puppetry, paper and cardboard are king.
