Overview

From the canals of Venice to the streets of Auckland, nomadic art exhibition The Maldives Exodus Caravan Show, has arrived. It isn't unusual for art shows to travel, but this exhibition makes its way around the world in the confines of a petite white caravan.

Curated by Danish artist Soren Dahlgaard, The Maldives Exodus Caravan Show brings together over 20 international artists (including Rirkrit Tiravanija, SUPERFLEX, Bik Van der Pol and NZ'er Mark Harvey) works which respond to the political plight of, and dire climate change facing the Maldives. Should ocean levels continue to rise, the atolls which stand on average just 2m above sea level, will become inhabitable and residents forced to seek a life elsewhere.

The caravan provided a unique alternative venue to host works which were removed  from the official Maldives Pavilion at the 55th Venice Biennale after last minute involvement of the dictatorial Maldivian government. The government has strict policies on any material and opinion which has an unfavourable view on the regime and so banned all works responding to political and climatic issues. All the more reason to support their cause and see this prime example of art as activism.

The Maldives Exodus Caravan Show is coming to a street near you. Check out the weekly schedule here.
