Overview
For many young people in our era of intangible media, vinyl is akin to vintage Hawaiian shirts: fun to browse, but not usually worth the price tag. But for the nostalgic collectors and DJs amongst us, record shopping is like treasure hunting. Luckily for Auckland's vinyl aficionados, The Other Crate Record Fair is back for its sixth year with only top shelf records for sale, handpicked by the pros.
Hosted by Allpress Studio, the record fair will feature curated selections from over 20 DJs and record collectors. The lineup of record slingers will include homegrown favourites such as 95bFM DJ Stinky Jim, Scott Towers (AKA Chopper Reeds of Fat Freddy's Drop fame), DJ and artist Julien Dyne, and boogie-funk connoiseur Jeremy Toy (aka Leonard Charles). The sellers will also provide the soundtrack, with a rotating cast of DJs throughout the day.
With records going for as little as 50 cents, fair founder Apera Te Hemara says it's all about being inclusive and getting young people back into vinyl. Used and new records will span all genres, with soul, funk, jazz, hip hop, drum and bass, Latin and more.
The Other Crate Record Fair will be held on Saturday, May 26 from 9am to 1pm at the Allpress Studio (8 Drake Street) in downtown Auckland.
