Overview

Tuxedo is a super-duo made up of Grammy nominated producers Mayer Hawthorne and Jake One.

Hawthorne is best known for his own brand of love drenched neo-soul, influenced by the sensual feeling of the Motown greats. His last visit down under was way back in 2012 off the back of his second album How Do You Do. Jake One on the other hand comes from the world of hip hop, notably being a member of 50 Cent’s G-Unit collective and enjoying production credits for Drake, Chance the Rapper, Rick Ross, and Kendrick Lamar.

Given their diverse backgrounds, the pair naturally bonded over a mutual love of electric boogie funk. They took it a step further back in 2006 exchanging mix tapes. Seven years later the relationship flourished, resulting in three collaborative tracks and a full length album under the Tuxedo title.

The album made its debut in the top 20 on the Billboard chart and they’ve subsequently been popping up at random to perform DJ sets across Europe and America. To date, Tuxedo have only ever performed three shows in their full band format, which is what makes their forthcoming visit extra special.

Come September 18, Tuxedo will perform a rare live set at Auckland’s Studio venue, combining live vocals, laptops, midi triggers, turntables and effects.
