Overview

Something a little different that has been growing in the Auckland sub culture for the past three years is The South Auckland Poet's Collective. This group is made up of young Pacific Island and Maori poets, writers and performers from around South Auckland. Armed with voices and note books, the passionate artists work at casting down the negative stereotypes of Pacific and Maori youth living in Manukau as portrayed by the media. Through these poetry performances, which are inspiring, moving and funny, the group replaces those stereotypes with real life experiences and stories.

The South Auckland Poet's Collective is an expression of culture, identity, and journeys. The lyrical skill within the group is incredible, transcending into performances that are the truest reflection of passion through the spoken word.

The group, who have gained a huge following in South Auckland, have also caught the eye of The Brave New Voices conference in the USA, to be held in July next year. This Wednesday the group is hosting the We Have A Dream fundraiser for this trip.

Take a trip a little out of the central playground for a night of culture through poetry that will no doubt be an entertaining, eye opening and worthwhile experience.
