Overview

Whau Arts Festival is a festival within a festival—a four day programme of events taking place in Avondale (which is located in the Whau ward) as part of Artweek Auckland 2014. The festival is a community-focused affair, with a busy, soon to be revealed programme of events that will include visual art, architecture, music, performance and workshops. Whau The People, the collective driving the festival, will also endeavor to enliven a large vacant lot in the centre of Avondale by turning it into an Urban Plantation. This kind of community based activation of public spaces for local use and enjoyment is right up my alley. Keep your calendar clear October 16 to 19 and get involved.

Whau The People is a collective that has a wealth of experience in disciplines such as theatre, visual arts and poetry. Its made up of Avondale locals Janet Lilo, Leilani Tamu, Bronwyn Bent, Jody Mcmillan and Sam Morrison. Keep an eye out for updates and sneak peeks into what's happening with preparations for the festival on their Facebook page.
