Overview
Whether exploring gender equality in New Zealand, perusing thousands of butterfly specimens or experience a vibrant Māori cultural performance, visitors to Auckland War Memorial Museum can now refuel with a premium blend of coffee. Paying homage to the year the grand structure was constructed, new espresso bar 1929 can be found serving up the good stuff in the Museum's Grand Foyer.
The pint-sized 10m2 space was opened in collaboration with Brian Sewell of Accession Hospitality, who has spent 30 years working between Michelin-starred restaurants and established Auckland cafes.
Allpress Coffee is on the grind, while loose leaf teas, freshly made juices and smoothies complete the beverage list. Home made treats including cheese and caramelised onion scones, chocolate bear claws and hot soups can be enjoyed in the Grand Foyer or outside overlooking the Auckland Domain. The ever-changing list of edibles is determined by what's available from local suppliers.
Over the coming 18 months the Museum will be developing a revamped retail and hospitality precinct as part of its Future Museum capital works plan.
"We are responding to the needs of Aucklanders and our important international visitor market by improving access to and within the Museum. We will be creating dynamic and exciting spaces to better welcome and orientate our visitors as well as exciting contemporary new galleries," says Megan McSweeney.
Find 1929 inside the Grand Foyer. It's open 10am–4pm, every day except Christmas Day.
