Mercury Plaza, or more affectionately known as 'Mercs', is one of Auckland's longest standing food courts. From steaming ramen to larb with plastic baggy-sealed sticky rice, mee goreng, hand-rolled sushi and wonton noodle soup from the beloved Tony, it really does have it all.

With gentrification slowly befogging the colourful glow of K' Road, the future of Mercs is now at risk. As part of Auckland Transport's public transport extension, the City Rail Link, an underground train platform is set to be built in Mercury Lane, something that is "expected to be a catalyst for urban development in the surrounding area".

Naturally, enthusiasts of Mercury Plaza are up in arms. A petition from the Save Mercury Plaza community aims to save and ensure the long term preservation of the food court icon. It is calling on Mayor of Auckland Len Brown and the Auckland Council to save the building located at 23-31 Mercury Lane. At the time of writing there were 1675 signatures on the petition.
