Overview

Forget what you know about the humble Kiwi bakery. The mince and cheese pie has no place at this new inner city opening. By way of Indonesia comes Barby's Bakery, a bakehouse specialising in soft and sweet Asian-style breads and a full spread of unconventional treats.

Established in 2005, the company now has more than 12 outlets in Indonesia and two across the ditch. The store on Victoria Street is the bakery's first foray into New Zealand, and you can expect to find a cabinet brimming with everything from kaya toast to red bean buns and the wildly popular Indomie Donuts — the savoury nuts, first created by Sydney's Donut Papi, that come filled with fried instant noodles.

You'll also be greeted by a generous display of mini rainbow steam buns, soft Japanese cheesecake, pillowy spicy chicken buns topped with floss and banana rolls with the combo of chocolate and cheese. The Triple Thunderbolt is the ultimate delicacy; the soft bread roll comes with three sections lathered in cheese, chocolate, sprinkles and nuts.

Find Barby's Bakery at 77B Victoria Street, Auckland CBD.
