Overview

Fans of beloved K' Road local Coco's Cantina will now be able to settle in for the most laid-back and cosy Sunday in town as the understated Italian-inspired eatery will open its doors on Sundays from June 9.

Despite a busy decade in trade, this is the first time Coco's has opened on Sundays. Owner Renee Coulter says the fabled K' Road strip has changed a lot in that ten years, but it finally felt right to include Sundays.

"Sundays on K' Road used to be a dead zone. We used to joke about tumbleweeds, lost tourists and the hardcore doing the walk of shame. Now it's a totally different buzz — places are open, people are around. We want to support that and be a part of it."

"So once you've hit Cross Street Markets for your vinyl, furniture and amazing denim, stopped at Fort Greene to pick up your bread, you can now head to Coco's for Sunday happy hour and meatballs or the Coco's new Sunday roast."

As with Coco's famous weekday happy hour — which happily runs longer than an hour — Sunday happy hour will go from 3pm to 6pm, offering $7 drinks and two kinds of pasta for $13 a bowl. There will also be a special Sunday spritz for $8, served until close. But possibly the biggest drawcard is set to be the Italian Sunday roast for $25.

"Shared eating on a Sunday always feels special," says Coulter. "People will always say yes to an invite of home-cooked Sunday roast; inviting someone for Netflix and UberEats doesn't have the same effect."

"A roast at Coco's is the next best thing to a home-cooked meal — long, slow-cooked meal with a drink and seasonal veggies — sounds like a nice way to start the week. Add a bit of music and that's the vibe we'll be pushing on a Sunday."

For those who like to get their mouths watering in advance, the Sunday roast for June 9 is a lemon and sage-stuffed porchetta, and Coulter says there will always be a vegetarian option "that will change every week, just like the meaty version."

As with the food and drink specials, Coco's Sunday live music offering will also change up weekly but will include a suitably eclectic mix from "a three-piece band playing Italian music to a DJ or a solo act." DJ Tina Turntables will take to the decks to see in the inaugural Sunday.
