Overview
Delicious news just in: Parnell's iconic food market is set to make a return this spring, with new Italian owners and a deliciously la dolce vita twist.
The La Cigale markets were an Auckland weekend institution and caused devastation upon shutting permanently in November last year. Previous owners Elizabeth and Mike Lind made the announcement on social media they were closing after 24 years of "bringing France to Parnell".
Today, on Wednesday, September 21, the Parnell Business Association has announced the market will make its return — but this time with an Italian twist thanks to new owner Buono Delicatessen.
Taking over the spot at the end of St George's Bay Road, Buono is a brand new Mediterranean delicatessen and bistro set to showcase exotic meats, cheeses and more from across Europe. Setting up shop in the freshly fitted out space, Aucklanders will be able to head to the new retail store from September 23.
But in especially exciting news, Buono will also be relaunching the markets, under the new name 'Gastro Markets' from Saturday, October 1.
Buono owner, Richard Casey said the site ticked all the boxes for the business.
"It's in a very accessible central location with ample car parking, the Parnell demographic is ideal for our target market, the site has a long and successful business history, and it presents a fantastic opportunity to continue the iconic weekend markets" he said.
"Buono will be providing delicatessen, café, and retail amenities — our goal is to bring good food to food lovers across Auckland with specialist products, knowledge, sampling, fresh produce, and an environment that people look forward to visiting time and time again."
So if you've been missing picking up your fresh produce, delicious pastries and weekend treats from the market, put October 1 in your diary — and remember to check out the new deli for all your Italian cooking needs.
Buono Delicatessen will open its doors to the public at 69 St Georges Road on Friday, September 23, and will relauch the Parnell markets from Saturday, October 1.
