Overview

Pulling up outside The Good Home in Onehunga your eyes will be drawn to the beautiful art deco style building it is housed in. The building was previously the Andrew Carnegie Free Library and its grandeur is evident. It certainly takes pride of place on the street it sits on and walking up the front steps you just automatically have the feeling that you're in for a good night. A vast space with different sectioned areas, The Good Home would be an ideal place for a group dinner, a romantic date or a family catch-up.

Staff are efficient, friendly and willing to go the extra mile. We decided to sit in the heated courtyard as it looked too enticing to resist. It looked magical and very inviting, lit up with fairy lights and with a view of the outdoor deck beyond. This is more than just another gastropub— the interior made it feel like a destination restaurant and the food certainly lived up to this as well. With a six-metre-long bar made out of marble and a vast selection of craft beers on tap as well as boasting an extensive wine list, you should take your time and linger.

We kicked things off with the crispy pork belly and the kaarage fried chicken. For small plates, the portions were very generous and the pork belly included two large chunks with a fresh apple and mint slaw featuring strips of crunchy apple that we couldn't get enough of. The fried chicken had a crisp exterior and was moist and piping hot on the inside. Served with a miso mayonnaise which was very moreish, the chicken didn't last long. The miso glazed hapuka was a delicate fish dish and came with edamame salsa and an avocado puree. The fish was cooked to perfection, flaking apart with the touch of the fork.

We sampled two desserts as we just couldn't make our minds up. The best was the warm chocolate brownie with Nutella puree and vanilla ice cream and we also tried the lemon tart which was equally delicious. This was served with lemonade gel and a lemon sorbet. Again, the portions are very generous so you might want to think about sharing a dessert.

We really felt at home at The Good Home and we're sure you will too. It's undoubtedly a place you'll want to spend a good couple of hours.
