Overview

Makers of classic Napoletana-style pizzas, Al Volo are so good at what they do they’ve even been listed as one of the top ten authentic wood-fired pizzerias in the world (outside of Naples).

With pizza being their main thing, the family-run business has put a lot of focus into getting it right. And, it's certainly paid off, with the establishment being voted the Best Pizza in Auckland on numerous occasions by Viva, Metro, Cuisine Magazine and yours truly. The wood-fired element gives off a smoky flavour and a delicious crispiness thanks to the extreme temperatures. They've also managed to avoid the bases being too dry and their preferred high quality ingredients, heighten the overall gastronomic experience. You won't be spoiled for choice with 22 varieties to choose from. They range from a straightforward focaccia ($7.50) to the more elaborate filled Calzone or Stromboli ($26.50) - consisting of prosciutto, ham, creamy burrata cheese and basil, baked into a turnover-style roll. In the middle ground (which range from $15.50 to $28.50), ingredients are vast and range from gorgonzola to egg, shaved potato, truffle oil, eggplant, pork fennel sausage and all the usuals. Extras like buffalo mozzarella and prosciutto can be added for $4.

As well as being able to dine in and make an evening out of it, the simplistic restaurant serves as the perfect spot to grab a slice before heading over to their neighbours the Powerstation for a gig or pre-drink at the Corner Store across the road.
