Overview
Coffee General has spread its wings from its homely Birkenhead abode to the Department Store in Takapuna, and now the suburb of Newmarket as well. Situated next to the prestigious Mind Lab (home to the next generation of Weta workshop wunderchildren), the space seamlessly incorporates design elements of both spaces, with robot-inspired wall art and clean industrial-style furnishing.
One of my favourite and most beloved food inventions of 2013, the cronut ($5), is served fresh daily at Coffee General, which already puts the cafe in my good books. Another new favourite of mine would be their beetroot and haloumi sandwich ($8.90) which was had a super generous portion size. And their coffee. Coffee General is the only non-partisan coffee shop in Auckland, meaning that any Three Beans, Ark, Flight or Kokako addict can find their fix, with coffee blends from Ethiopia to Brazil to even Indonesia. Also, any of those coffee connoisseurs who like their coffee served in a chemex, or plain filter, can find it here too. This place is the coffee mecca of Auckland.
With so many choices of blend and serving options, the cafe's practically begging you to be a picky drinker. And if you don't know what you like, then have a chat to the staff. Sam, the manager has years of experience behind the espresso machine, in the kitchen and behind the bar, so he's more than qualified to help you pick exactly what you'd like. I personally recommend a Merito elegant blend machiato. It's strong enough to wake you up without giving you a roundhouse kick to the head.
So drop in, and explore the different tastes of coffee like you've never done before.
