Overview

Auckland is lacking a good old fashioned sandwich shop. It has plenty of quirky cafés, tasty eateries and fancy restaurants but what ever happened to the delicious homemade subs?

New North Road's new sandwich house, Hero, is certainly no wet lettuce. The Eden Terrace shop has one simple goal: to make the perfect sambo. Owners Huri Neill and Matt Stewart intend to reach that destination with their mouthwatering take on New York/Italian-style hero sandwiches and hoagies. The Sandwich house may be small, but don't let that fool you, their rolls are definitely not on the slight side — in fact, they're packed to the brim.

Set up by the co-founder of Kingsland's pop-up coffee outlet, Drummer Boy, Huri Neill and Melt creator Matt Stewart, it doesn't come with any surprise that the two have joined forces to create the best thing since sliced bread.

Gone are the days of feeling depressed about your lunch, Hero saves the day by bringing joy to your midday meal. As you glance at the interestingly named menu, your tastebuds will be spoilt for choice. There are currently seven menu items on offer. Why not try  house favourite the Walter? Crammed with tuna, sweet pickle relish and cos lettuce, you'll be left pining for more. If tuna isn't your thing then the Ralph is just as good, jam packed with gochujang chicken, pickled ginger, red cabbage and a handful of jalapenos. The Rita won a place in my heart or should I say my belly, filled with roasted cauliflower, herbed feta, and curried vinaigrette.

If you're looking to grab a bite before work then their good friend Barry can help you out, the scrambled egg, bacon, cheddar and basil mayo, all served on a brioche bun is sure to fight off those Monday blues. Wash this down with one of their supreme coffees or if coffee isn't your morning tipple then an organic tonic is sure to quench your thirst.

Not only does Hero showcase some stunning sarnies, but it also features quirky artistic displays, which often change to support emergent local talent. The bright space is extremely inviting and will make you feel right at home.

So, if you're not really fancying last night's leftovers or that tinned chicken soup in the cupboard, I'd suggest that you head to Eden Terrace and treat your gut to one of Hero's epic handmade rolls.
