Hamilton's best doughnuts have arrived in Auckland.
October 24, 2019
Mamas Donuts has been making delicious spheres of doughy goodness for years, with Aucklanders making the pilgrimage to Hamilton just to get their hands on them. But finally, Mamas has joined the local doughnut scene with its first store in the 09.
The North Shore store can be found just off Archers Road in the industrial heart of Glenfield. As soon as you step inside you could easily believe you're in Newmarket or Britomart. A white tiled counter and soft lighting highlight the open kitchen where you can watch the magic being created. I went on a Thursday lunch time and walked out with more doughnuts than I'd planned on. It's seriously too hard to choose just one.
The Choc Custard was every bit as good as it sounds with gooey vanilla custard inside. The German Choc was filled with a surprising but delicious coconut cream and finished with chocolate icing. Both were deep-fried to perfection, with soft pillowy dough and just the right amount of sweet filling. I also adored the Doboys which are the actual hole from the donut. Brushed with a secret glaze, they're very moreish and a bargain at $2 a pop.
As well as the classics, Mamas makes flavours of the month — it's worth checking the brand's Instagram account to see what's coming up. Made fresh daily, these doughnuts really are just like mama used to make them. It's always been a family affair for the owners Rach and Becs and continues to be so. The store is open from 7am to 1pm on Thursday, Friday and Saturday only to support the working mums. You can also order online, which makes it perfect for work or party treats, or just because it's Friday.
Auckland does have an abundance of places to get doughnuts, but Mamas has the reputation and flavours to make its name known. Doughnut range from $2.50 for glazed to $3.50 for the more outlandish, or you can treat the family (or just yourself) to a box of 12 for $35. As well as the Glenfield store, Mamas has four locations in Hamilton, Tauranga, Hastings and Dunedin. There's a Botany store coming soon.
