Overview
In the heart of the city on Durham Lane there is a new cosy, hole in the wall style coffee shop serving a selection of delectable treats and coffee. A slim, brick building, the comforting and familiar smell of coffee seeps out onto the street, and judging by the queue which was spilling out of the door, this place has quickly become a favourite with locals and visitors. MoinMoin has a very relaxed, chilled out atmosphere and if you're lucky enough to nab a cute window nook, it would be the perfect place to work from your laptop or simply to people watch over your long black.
Deriving its name from the German slang term for 'hello', if you close your eyes you can almost imagine being in a kaffeehaus in Berlin or Hamburg.
The coffee is Supreme so you can't go wrong on that front, and it is served up by charismatic and friendly chief barista Julia. Now you couldn't leave this place without sampling one of their many pastries and sweet treats which are on display. Be warned though, when we went at 10.30am, everything was almost sold out so you have to be quick— we assure you it's worth it though.
All cakes and pastries are supplied by Little Cake Kitchen and we sampled one of the all-butter croissants, a chocolate macaron and an almond croissant. These croissants were amongst the best we've tasted, buttery and moist and the macaron was crispy and light.
Keep your ears close to the ground for the introduction of franzi (the first in Auckland) which are an amalgamation of croissant and brioche smothered in butter and cinnamon. We can hardly wait.
